Go to the nearest branch of the bank you have chosen, take 3 forms of identification and ask for the account you want. You MUST ask for the account by its correct name: For example, If it’s the NatWest account you must say: "I would like to open a Step Account please."

What proof will I need to open an Account?

By Law banks and building societies have to identify any new customers. This is to prevent criminals from money laundering. Proof varies from one firm to another but most should accept a Government issued document…..Passport or Driving licence with photo. If you don’t have these documents they may accept a letter from a government department or local council confirming your right to state benefits. They may even accept a letter from an appropriate person such as a teacher or social worker.

Remember: You have a right to a basic bank account. This advice will make the process of opening an account much easier.
